The original Kurawaka program began as an animation and design initiative developed by a kura kaupapa based in West Auckland and a seasoned Kiwi animator. The program's main focus was to train and nurture young Māori and Pacific artists in a variety of animation skills and techniques.
The Kurawaka training program has flourished over time, forming partnerships with a private training establishment (PTE) to establish a tertiary-level digital arts program. Additionally, it has given rise to Kurawaka Animation, a comprehensive animation and design studio. Many of the original Kurawaka trainees now constitute a significant portion of the animation talent working at the studio, contributing their skills to various local projects.
The members of the Kurawaka team not only showcase exceptional artistic talent, but they also bring along an in-depth understanding and genuine appreciation of tikanga Māori and a distinctive Kiwi flair.
The Kurawaka team is a collective of highly experienced industry veterans, and young exciting animation talent.
The old school animators all have considerable experience in various areas of animation, including writing, producing, directing, designing and animating. They may not be household names, but you are bound to recognise a few of the titles on their extensive list of credits. With these years of accumulated experience, comes an extensive network of who’s who in the world of animation.
The artistic young blood of Kurawaka have come through the ranks of Kurawaka’s industry focused training program. This team of young Māori artists are as well versed in the art of the animation and design, as they are in all things tikanga.
